Transition from Nursery to Big Girl Room

RoomI’ve had an itch to do some redecorating, so I thought I’d make a few changes to my toddler’s room.  When we initially decorated her room, we did it so that we wouldn’t have to make “too” many changes as she got older.  We stuck with a butterflies and bugs theme, which is now sort of transforming into a princess theme.  If you would have told me that my little girl would have a princess room five years ago, I would have laughed in your face.  Not MY little girl.  Nope.  No way.  She was going to be a little retro/punk/non-girly…girl.  well let me just tell you, the minute we were told, “It’s a girl!” on that ultrasound table, the smile on my face just stretched from ear-to-ear and thoughts of the color pink and flowers and butterflies just raced across my mind.  I even apologized to my husband

saying, “I’m sorry but this is where all of your money is going to go.”  He kept his gaze on the monitor as if trying to look for the slightest indication that the ultrasound tech might be mistaken.  Don’t get me wrong, he adores that little girl like no one else could but he knew what he was in for.

I digress.   We set up the “toddler bed” a couple of months ago, which is basically the crib minus one rail.   We kept the bumper pad and one rail because she tends to cuddle up against it as tight as she can.   So, today I decided to rearrange her room and ended up taking down the bumper pad and the other crib rail.   Now it looks much more like a real bed rather than a half crib.   In case  you’re wondering, yes, I’m a bit obsessive compulsive and these things tend to bother me.   Don’t ask any more questions, just read on.

There is also a big walk-in closet in her room that I’m going to reorganize and make it more of an extra little “hide-away” for her.  This will require taking down the closet door (honey, we can talk about this after you get home from work, mkay?).  Anyway, I’m excited.  It’s looking more like a big girl room rather than a “nursery”. Wow, I remember the day we painted that room, transforming it from a guest room/office into a nursery for a tiny baby.  I specifically remember one day just sitting and sobbing (hormones) and saying to myself, “This is no longer OUR room.  This is HER room now (her being the helpless fetus inside of me).   Didn’t take me long to get over that.   I also couldn’t wait for her to communicate to me how much she just loved her room because look, we really did a great job on this room.   I’m not ashamed to admit it.   It’s a freaking awesome room.  I would have killed for her room growing up.

Today we purchased a few items for the big girl room.  A couple of new pillows (toddler-head size), a new sheet (free of nose bleed stains – woohoo!), fabulous new window panels (because previously, there was only a valance) and stringy beads for the new hide-away room. I finished adding the new things we bought for her room and left her in there for a nap.   As I sit here typing this blog post, I just heard her over the monitor exclaim, “Oh!  I like this pillow!”

Sounds like we have one satisfied little customer.
