Adventures in Potty Training – Week 1

Well, we “officially” (?) started potty training this past week. We started out slowly, not a lot of pressure but a lot of talking about “going potty” and being a “big girl”. Maybe we’re going slowly for me, just get to my feet wet.

I was able to get her to sit on her little training potty and she did go poop a couple of times this week but not without starting in her diaper first. We made a big deal about her finishing up on the potty and she seemed to really like that.

I got some great advice from our friend, Ann (thank you!). We’ve left a pile of books near the potty and as she sits, we read to her. The first day, which was last Monday, I was asking her about every three minutes if she needed to go pee. I suppose that might have been a bit much.

I bought her a potty book several months ago, it’s called “It’s Potty Time for Girls: Potty Training Made Easy“. She loves to push the little button to hear the flushing sound and the little girl laughing. I figured she’d be afraid of it, because she’s afraid of most electronic things. I’ll be picking out some more potty training books for her to read sometime this week.

So, right now the biggest feat could possible be my patience. I don’t have a lot of it and I know that’s what it takes to train her. That being said, I’d love to hear your potty training stories (Yes, Liz, even the ones about your dog!) and any suggestions you may have for me. I realize this may be a loooong road.

  1. Our story for Gabriella was too easy….We bought the same book. We read it…We sat her on the potty…and she went! Did we get lucky or what? (That was 19 months) I thought that 19 months was too young, so we just tried to go many times a day with no pressure. After her 2nd b-day…we started wearing underwear full time. She had a few accidents, but we just kept them on and it didn’t take long. I remember our first big trip to the Bronx Zoo with underwear on…I was so nervous and she was fine. Now it is time to start with Gillian. Do you think I will have it that easy again? haha (doubtful)! I will have to keep you updated. Natalie

  2. i actually don’t remember when georgia was totally out of diapers (and she’s only 4, jeez, my mind…) anyway, i’m guessing it was about 2 1/2 or 3… that’s just a guess… anyway, i just sort of let her lead the way. she showed promise that she wanted to start going in the potty many times, and many times i tried to start training her. but it always seemed to disappear (her interest and the training)… and i tried not to let people’s stories (well MYYYYYYY CHILD…) bother me. i figured when she’s ready, she’s ready. because i’ve personally witnessed some parents train at a very young age (like 1 year), and the only one trained was the parent. FLYING to the potty with their kid as they’re pooping in their undies day after day. i didn’t want it to be that way. so eventually, with a little coaxing, talking and stories, testing the waters, and a whole lot of willingness once georgia was ready to be a big girl she basically did it on her own. in her own time. when SHE was ready. and you know what? it was actually EASY!

You must get the charming “Once Upon A Potty” book and video. It has a boy and girl version s- make sure to look. It makes all lil’ kids I know giggle and they end up understanding their body and about potties and they seem to all gladly go!From what I heard — girls are easier to train than boys. I didn’t have a hard time with my 2 boys…so if that is an indication for an easier transition for my Katie, then I’m excited.Good luck on Hailey’s boot camp..er I mean training…let me know how it goes.:-) MJ

  4. Oh, we are still in the throws of potty training, but we’re not on any ‘program’. I’m not a program type of person — we are just letting it happne when it happens. She usually goes on the potty 1-2 times a day — and she asks to go! I guess I should put some more effort into it, huh? We do have big girl underware, maybe we’ll try those on this afternoon?

  5. We have unofficially started. We have been letting them sit on the potty and see how things go. Then in Oklahoma, Emma fell in the toilet. So I thought for sure she would be done with potty for awhile. But suddenly they have decided that they want to try every night. Who knows what goes on at the sitters, but I think I will let her know to let try as often as she possibly can.

  6. I let my kids run around naked. When they are naked, they go on the toilet. My daughter just pooped for the first time on the toilet today!! Yeay!!

  7. Ladies~I had to train 7 boys and 1 girl(the girl being Amy). Some were easy and some were not. And there are just too many stories to tell about. I will say that I’m glad to put the job in all your young hands. lol
