Hailey’s big vocabulary

Eric and I sat down yesterday and made a list of all of the words that Hailey says. Words that she can “associate” with an object, person, animal, etc. Now, she doesn’t necessarily pronounce them all correctly but she does use them at the appropriate times. She obviously doesn’t have that perfected yet and won’t for a while. We came up with forty-four words. Here they are in no particular order:

1. Choo choo (or “doo-doooooo!” A train. Whenever the trains go by out back, she races to the window and her arm goes up and down in a whistle blowing motion and she says, “doooo-ddooooooo!”)
2. Kitty (we have two cats. nuff said.)
3. Mama (I’ll let you figure that one out.)
4. Dada (I’m convinced that he is her favorite. As soon as she hears the garage door go up at 4pm, she races to the railing of our living room loft and excitedly repeats “Dada, dada!” and waits for Eric to come inside. Then she just stands there and laughs. THIS melts my heart.) Oh, this could also mean “Target” because we go there all of the time and I tell her that’s where we’re going.
5. Pretty (or “pity”. She says this about mama’s jewelry and other assorted items.)
6. Potty (I am a stay-at-home mom and the bathroom door stays open during the day. She is very well aware of what I’m doing when I’m in there. She’ll pace back and forth outside of the door and point to me and ask, “potty?”
7. Door (She likes to open and close doors now and knows what it is and what she’s doing with it.)
8. Help (or “hep” “hep”. We have taught Hailey some signs and this was one of them. I’m not sure if this is the correct way of signing help but we pat our chests and tell her to ask for help. She caught on to this and now asks for “hep” and pats her chest. Only problem is, we generally don’t know what she’s asking help for. Woops. That will be the next thing we teach her, “elaborate”.)
9. Moo (what a cow says)
10. Neigh (what a horse says)
11. Baa (what a sheep says)
12. Meow (she’s been doing this since like 10 months. I think meow was her first word.)
13. Arf (or “um um um um”. She doesn’t know “F” yet. We know this is a dog though because when she sees dogs, she does it.)
14. Oliver (or “ahhh-diiinerrrrr”. This is the name of our 24 lb. cat who tolerates has become bff’s with Hailey)
15. Indie (This is our female cat who loathes isn’t fond of Hailey and rarely comes around. Hailey ALWAYS calls for her.)
16. Down (or “down down down”. She says this when she’s up on something, like our laps or the couch or her high chair.)
17. Up (She’s just learning this one. She says it when she wants to get up on the couch, usually.)
18. NO (Take a guess. This can also mean “snow”. However, she does not put the “s” in front for some reason.)
19. Elmo (or “umbo”. The Sesame Street character. He is by far her fav.)
20. Uh oh (She learned this from one of her books, “Baby Angels”. One day, she just handed the book to me and said “Uh oh”. So, now, we ask her what the baby angels say and she replies with “uh oh”. She also purposely throws food and drink onto the floor and says “uh oh”. We’re trying to teach her to say, “I did that on purpose.”)
21. Duck (or “duuu”. She has a refrigerator toy that includes a duck and she likes to play with her “duuuu’s” in the bath tub.)
22. Baby (She just learned this because of Kerry’s new baby. She calls him “be-be”. She also calls herself “be-be” if she sees a picture of herself.)
23. All done (She says this when she’s finished eating or drinking and when she’s at the doctor’s office, before they even start examining her.)
24. Hi or “hi-dough” or hewwooo” (She says this to us all of the time. “Hi-dough” is hello if you haven’t already figured that out.)
25. Bye or “bye-dough” (She knows that hi is “hello”, so bye must be “byello”. Hence, “bye-dough”. She says this when pushing her little people out the back door of their house.)
26. Eye (We have these on our faces. She literally sticks her finger in your eye when she says it.)
27. Night night (She walks over to the stairs at bed-time and looks over at us and says “night night”. She likes sleeping. She sometimes says, “Night night dada”. Again, heart melting.)
28. Cheese (or “tthhhhhh”. We know this is cheese because she says “ttthhhhh” when she sees cheese.)
29. Blast off! (or, put your hands high above your head and just yell. This is what the Little Einsteins do and she likes it. She also pats her legs when they pat before blasting off.)
30. Touch down! (This is very similar to blast off but she sounds more like she’s actually saying “touch down”.)
31. Beep (or “be-be-be”. This is the sound the microwave timer and stove timer makes. Oh, and the car horn when mommy is angry at another driver.)
32. Poo poo (I discovered that she knew what this meant one day when she told me “poo poo” and a strange odor was coming from her diaper. Now she tells me whenever she goes.)
33. More (Or “mo”. She knows the sign for more. She does it and says “mo” when she wants more food or drink.)
34. Please (Or “peaassse”. She knows to ask please when she wants something, like a cookie.)
35. Ooo ooo ooo (What a monkey says.)
36. Ball (Self-explanitory. We play ball.)
37. Balloon (Or “boon”. She figured out what this was one night at On the Border. We gave her a balloon. She played with it for days. Just the other day, I took her back there for lunch and there weren’t any balloons but she remembered getting one there, so she started looking around and saying “boon” “boon” “boon”.)
38. Phone (Or “bome”. Again, she can’t make the “F” sound. She likes to play with our cell phones and whenever the house phone rings, she runs to it and says “bome, bome, bome!”)
39. Hot (She knows that the oven is hot and she knows that food is hot. She’ll say, “hot, hot, hot” and then makes a blowing gesture with her mouth, to cool it off.)
40. Apple (She loves apples. She figured out how to eat an apple the other day. I mean, she knows how to eat an apple that’s cut up in front of her but she was actually holding the whole apple and figured out how to bite into it. She’s not so sure about the skin just yet.)
41. Light (These are on the ceiling. This she knows. They are also on the roof of the car and she likes me to turn them on and off. She’s also figured out how to turn them on and off by herself at home.)
42. On (She loves to turn on the light)
43. Off (Or just “ah”. You know why.)
44. Yay! (Pure excitement. Only, after she says it and claps, she usually ends up crying. We haven’t figured that one out yet.)

  1. what a great idea to write down her vocab!! I was going to do a notebook but writing them in the blog is a great idea. you may see j’s list up sometime soon! :) so cute about dada coming home & “pity”. such a girl!

  2. i want to always remember this. someday, i’ll show her. i’m planning on printing out all of these posts and putting them in a binder for her.

  3. I clicked on you from RSM’s blog, the bit on “uh oh” cracked me up. I’ve been trying to tell my 14 month old that we don’t say uh oh but “on purpose” in some cases. The “ahhhh-diiiiiiinerrrrrrrrr” for Oliver amused me also.
